To build the Filtration Unit, we will utilize the Corsi-Rosenthal box design. You will need four MERV 13 air filters, a box fan, duct tape, and cardboard. Assemble the filters into a cube, seal the edges, attach the fan, and create a base using cardboard.
Here is a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Gather Materials (all items are included in kit except for Scissors or utility knife)
Four MERV 13 air filters
A 20-inch box fan
1 20 x 20 Cardboard Sheet: For the base.
4 small cardboard triangles: For ensuring a tight fit.
4 small rounded cardboard triangles: For ensuring all air flows out of the fan.
Duct tape: For sealing and securing everything.
Scissors or utility knife
Step 2: Assemble the Filter “Cube”
Orientation: Pay close attention to the airflow arrows printed on the filters. Ensure the arrows point inwards, towards the center of the box you're building.
Connect the Filters: Tape the filters together, forming a cube shape. Ensure the pleats are vertical.
Seal the Edges: Use duct tape to seal all the edges of the filters, creating a tight seal.
Step 3: Create the Base
Attach the Base: Tape the square cardboard to the bottom of the filter cube, ensuring a tight seal.
Seal the Air Pockets: Add the 4 cardboard triangles on the opposite side of the cube - one of each edge of the cube - this ensures no air pockets when the fan is attached.
Step 4: Attach the Fan
Orient the Fan: Place the box fan on top of the filter cube, with the fan facing upwards (blowing air out)
Seal the Fan: Use duct tape to seal the fan to the top of the filter cube, ensuring a tight seal around the edges.
Cover the Fan Corners: Put the 4 rounded cardboard triangles on the top of the fan corners. This ensures that all air is flowing out of the fan and none of the air is flowing back in.
Tips for Success
Sealing is Key: Ensure all seams and edges are tightly sealed to prevent unfiltered air from entering or exiting the box.
Vertical Pleats: Keep the pleats of the filters in a vertical orientation.
Placement: Place the Corsi-Rosenthal box in an area where it can effectively circulate air, away from walls and corners.
Regular Maintenance: Replace the filters regularly, as they become clogged with dust and particles.
Precautions
The filtration unit, including its power cord, should be placed in a location where it will not be bumped into or tripped over. A table or cabinet where it will not fall is preferable to the ground.
Do not leave children unattended near the filtration unit.
Impact with the filtration unit may damage the filters or break the seal, rendering it less effective.
Do not place anything on top of the filtration unit that might fall or spill into it. This may harm the motor and damage the filters. If this happens, discontinue use.
Do not operate the filtration unit around a water source.
Do not operate the filtration unit around solvents.
It is recommended that the filtration unit be turned off if a space will be unoccupied for 30 minutes or longer.
